E-commerce as a catalyst for rural development in India’s Handloom Sector
Authors

Abstract
The Indian handloom sector is one of the oldest and most significant industries, employing millions of artisans across rural areas. Despite its cultural importance, the sector faces persistent challenges, including limited market access, low earnings, and exploitation by intermediaries. In recent years, e-commerce platforms have emerged as a transformative force, offering direct-to-consumer access, fairer pricing, and broader visibility for handloom products. This study explores how e-commerce contributes to the socio-economic upliftment of handloom weavers in India. Using a mixed-methods approach—including surveys and case studies from states like Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Assam—the research assesses changes in income, working conditions, digital inclusion, and social status among artisans engaging with online marketplaces. It also evaluates barriers to adoption such as digital illiteracy, logistical challenges, and lack of branding. The findings suggest that while e-commerce provides new opportunities, its benefits are unevenly distributed and heavily dependent on ecosystem support including government policy, training programs, and digital infrastructure. The study concludes with recommendations for inclusive growth strategies that ensure equitable participation of marginalized handloom communities in India’s digital economy.
